Grow tomatoes

Tomatoes are one of the most popular grown fruit and no vegetable lover can resist a ripe, juicy tomato. We mostly use them in dressing salads. Tomatoes can be organically grown or there are also chemically grown tomatoes. Food companies mostly grow tomatoes by the chemical method because this method makes their tomatoes grow quicker and thus make more profit with large quantity of growing tomatoes. However, if making money is not your goal, you can then grow tomatoes, by the organic method. It is a known fact that organically grown tomatoes taste much better, they are mouth watering, juicy and over all good for health.

There are plenty of different tomato varieties and depending on the location, you should know how to grow tomatoes. The best advice can be got from a local nursery expert before you start growing tomatoes. A good location for growing tomatoes is a place that gets direct sunlight for about 7 hours or more. Also, there should be good air flow, in order to help to reduce the risk of fungal diseases. Tomato plants require more watering during the later part of the season. Also, if you need an early crop, you should then use a sandy loam soil. This type of soil drains well and also warms up quickly. You should also check the pH of your soil which is one of the important steps towards growing tomatoes. The pH factor of the soil should be between 5.5 and 7.0. There are test kits available in the market. You can buy in order to measure the soil ph by your own self.

If you intend to grow tomatoes in soil that is rich in organic matter, you should use well-rotted manure or good compost. Either of these methods should be well applied before you plant. If you have a large area for growing tomatoes, then get into the habit of using two bushels of manure, or 4 bushels of compost per 100 square feet. Lean the technique of planting well. Spacing is an important factor and so you should allow about 5 to 6 square feet between seedlings. This will give the plants lots of room and you can easily place supports and cages around them. If you are going to use stakes instead of larger supports, then you can consider planting them closer together. You can use mulch in your tomato garden and you should put up tall stakes or wire cages in order to make them to grow well. Tomato plants are capable to climb as high as 6 feet. Avoid allowing tomato plants to grow along the ground. Otherwise they will get diseased and will be eaten by pests. In order to discourage pests from coming into your garden, you can use hair to stop slugs in their tracks and soapy water can be used for aphids.

Tomatoes can also be grown at home. You need the right size of container for your plants. In order to grow the little cherry type tomatoes, which are excellent in salads, you can use the regular size hanging baskets. However, if you want to grow larger tomatoes, then you can use five gallon buckets. The idea is to allow plenty of room to grow. If you don’t want to have larger type of plants, you can buy a determinate tomato plant that will stop growing after they reach a certain size. On the other hand, you can buy an indeterminate tomato plant that will continue to grow and produce larger tomato plants. Two varieties of indeterminate tomato that I can suggest now are “Early girl” and “Big Boy”. Use a container that has holes in the bottom, in order to allow proper drainage. Also, use healthy potting soil that has natural organic matter.
