Planting tomatoes
The tomato is considered to be the most widely-eaten fruits in the world. It is found to be the fundamental part of the cuisine of many cultures. The tomato is one of the most common edible plants in American gardens. In the area of organic gardening, more and more Americans want to feed their families with home grown tomatoes and vegetables. Tomatoes hate the cold and should be kept at a consistent temperature. There is no real benefit of planting out tomatoes early as they seem to catch up with the tomatoes that are planted out later and thus they will reach the harvesting stage at the same time. Planting tomatoes can be considered as a very satisfying thing to do. All you have to do is just follow a good plan and you will see yourself enjoying the fruits of your labor.
The first decision you need to make is to decide if you want to start your plants from seed or you want to buy plants from your local nursery. Planting from seed will save you some money, as a pack of seed will save you some money, as a pack of seed will obviously cost less then tomato plants. You generally get a better choice of different varieties when you start from the seed level. However, there is an advantage if you plant tomatoes by buying from your local nursery. In this case, you get an opportunity to plant only the best looking plants, from your point of view. In short, you get an opportunity to pick out the best ones. Also, you can try planting a few different types of tomatoes plants. This step will extend your harvest because you will then be in a position to pick a few plants that produces fruit early and a few more that come later in the growing season.
Your tomato plant should be planted somewhere that gets a lot of sun. Tomato plants do better if they are in a spot that gets at least six hours of sun each day. You should also ensure that your planting spot can be watered without a lot of trouble. When there is no rain, you will then need to water your plants so that they can continue to be healthier. Plant your tomatoes in the spring time, well after the last front and front danger is past. Keep in mind about that freaky April day where temperatures are likely to dip below 32 but this happens very rarely. During hot climates, you should plant your tomatoes when temperatures begin to drop in the early fall. The usual tools and materials that you need for planting your tomatoes are compost, a trowel, garden fork or tiller, plant supports such as cages and stakes and plant ties.
In order to harden transplants to the elements, a week to ten days of transition time should be given between indoor and outdoor growing conditions. You first place the plants in dappled shade and then ensure that they are protected from strong winds. Do remember to bring them in the house at night. As time passes by, gradually give the plants more exposure to the sun and wind. As days passes by, there will be a time when you’ll be able to leave them out overnight. As far as the soil is concerned, you should mix the soil with composed manure until it becomes loose for at least six to eight inches into the ground. If you realize that the pH factor of the soil needs adjustment, you can then add limestone or sulfur as an when required. After the soil is prepared, you can transplant. The tomato stems should be buried up to the plant’s second set of leaves. Eventually, roots will start forming along the buried stem. You will need to install a type of a support system. You can position wire cages over the plants. Tomato plants usually stop growing at a certain height but there are some other varieties which grow taller than other types of tomato plants.
